Formed in the spring of 1996 by guitarist/singer Greg Clagett and former bassist George Murphy, Blue Mood Records recording artists LA Groove combines an eclectic group of musicians that is reflected in their music as well as their stage performance and presence.
After several years in the regional music scene in the midwest LA Groove (formerly known as Planet Blues) has opened for many national acts that have passed through Louisville including Duke Robillard, Anson Funderburgh, Delbert McClinton, and Tab Beniot and have been invited to play around the country in such prestigious festivals including the Monterey Bay Blues Festival in California and the W.C. Handy Festival in Henderson, Kentucky.
Bringing together two of the region's best soloists with Greg Clagett's "ferocious, fiery guitar attack" alongside Richard Malone's "soulful, barnstorming mastery" of the saxophone, they take their instruments on journeys that range from "melodic and haunting" to "dueling powerhouse shred."
Joining them in the rhythm section is journeyman drummer/percussionist LaMont "Phatbeat" Melson, and veteran California native bassist/songwriter/vocalist, Cole Prior Stevens, "constantly inflicting a backbone of infectious, original groove." This, topped off with Clagett's honest vocal stylings and Malone and Stevens' backup vocal harmonies.
LA Groove have become a regional force since their debut release "Planet Blues" (1999). They then stepped up their pace with their live release "Live-An Evening On the Job" (2001), which features the band when it's at it's best..LIVE!..A new studio recording is slated for release in late 2003
Claiming Louisville, Kentucky as their homebase, they remain a cornerstone in the region by delivering their own brand of Groove with the richness of the riverfront from which they hail. From electrifying blues to jazzy melodies, funk, rock inspired performances, and a respectful nod to R&B, they lay it down with a mixed bag of Soulful Groove..
