With the attitude and vocal prowess of Anastacia and the funkdafied
sounds of Jamaroquai, Lyla-Jayne is Australia’s SOUL DIVA.
Meet the Queen of Drama from Downunder
With her effervescent, friendly Aussie charm, youth and vivacity, it is firstly perhaps appropriate to acknowledge that Lyla-Jayne is not so much a “drama queen” but more accurately a “queen of the dramatics”. Confidently utilising her soulful and amazingly versatile “larger than life” divaesque vocals as her palette, she colourfully paints modern tales of good and evil, love and loss, pleasure and pain with funk, disco, R&B and infectious beats as her musical tools. These lyrical grooves are certainly no colour by number.
Getting down to the basics, it is important to note that Lyla-Jayne is no stranger to the stage. Performing from the age of five and learning the piano from the age of 7, this tiny 5”2 exotic beauty from the land downunder has become recognised as one of Sydney’s finest singer/ songwriters. Across the south & east coast of Australia, Lyla-Jayne and her funky band has been entertaining audiences of all ages in some of Australia’s most prestigious and internationally recognised venues and events including; The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras ‘99, The Adelaide Festival Theatre, The Sydney Opera House, The Basement, The Harbourside Brasserie, The Golden Sheaf, Sydney Star City Casino & The Adelaide Fringe Festival ‘00.
Influenced by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Donna Summers, Chaka Khan, Lisa Stansfield and Jamiroquai, this well-seasoned and gifted performer/ singer songwriter cathartically, as it where, draws provocative, deeply personal, meditative and sometimes amusing in-depth character portraits which have made an impact on people from all walks of life. After entertaining both the bodies and minds of her audiences for the past three years, there has been a growing response to her music. In fact it was only after numerous requests from her followers asking her when she would produce a CD of her own songs that Lyla-Jayne decided it was time to find the right producers to work with and get the music to the masses.
Looking for an advantage over her Aussie contemporaries, Lyla-Jayne travelled to the UK in the later part of 2001 and recorded with UK’s top record producer Andy Whitmore of Greystoke Productions (Pet Shop Boys, Diana Ross, Elton John, Terence Trent Darby), as well as Sonik Fusion (Positiva Records) and Soho Electric (Melissa Bell, Collette). Upon her return, she also recorded with Stuart Stuart Chartsong Productions (dance producer Festival Mushroom Records) in Brisbane, Australia.
Lyla-Jayne has also previously worked with some of Australia’s and NZ’s top producers such as Clive Lendich (Boys II Men, Jermaine Jackson, Human Nature), Tim Dudfield (Ce Ce Penniston, Bardot), and Chuk Singh (Bardot, Scandal’us). However, it is her latest recorded material that has gained her most positive interest to date within Australia from some of the world’s largest record companies inc. Warner Chappell Music, BMG, Festival Mushroom Records as well as DJs and radio stations (receiving constant airplay since November 2001 on the Triple J Network, The Basement Radio, Radio 2RDJ, Groove FM, 2SER, Bondi FM as well as countless web radio stations).
Where To Now:
Setting her sights at attainable international success, Lyla-Jayne is in the UK working on a recording project with Andy Whitmore and collaborating with her Aussie band via the internet with the big help of Nick Munro (guitarist & computer extrodinaire).
Industry Comments:
“A strong confident soulful singer. I have seen Lyla-Jayne go leaps and bounds over the past year to become an artist who has now found her niche and thriving in it”, Francesca Wilkins, Festival Mushroom Australia, Jan 2002
“A powerful singer/songwriter reminiscent of Anastacia and Macy Gray” Daniela Djuric, A&R Warner Chappell Music Australia, September 2000
“Lyla-Jayne has a rich resonant voice that demands attention, with a range that is seemingly endless. Yet aside from her charasmatic stage presence and playful nature it is her voice that people go away raving about. Now; where does that voice come from?!” Adam Zammitt, Editor, Drum Magazine, Australia, La Bar gig review 2001
“A female Jamiroquai with an Aretha Franklin edge” Warrick Hornby, The Whiltlams, Warner Music, Australia
“An honest, unpretentious & enormously talented singer/songwriter graced with ease of communicating with her audience. She could play in any venue and be well received.” Tamlen, The Basement Mgr
“Lyla-Jayne turns vocal works into svelte rhythmic funk, soul and groove (together at last). One very classy songwriter in a league of her own” Raoul Graf, Revolver Magazine Australia, May 2001
