In May of 1998, Penance for Heresy (P4H) came into existence, a name decided upon to represent the focus and energy that had formed. The name has many meanings but in its simplest form the name is a statement, 'paying the price for ideals different from the norm'. At the Homestead, Katikati, June 1998, P4H embarked on 2-day recording session. A 5 song demo was recorded on a 4-track recorder for P4H by "Little Stevie" McCabe. January 1999, P4H recorded 'Society Rules' on a 24-track setup. The final mix was mastered at York Street Sudios by Gavin Botica.
