David Alaverdian is a Soviet-born pianist. He has completed 5 years at Uspensky Special Music School for Gifted Children in Tashkent, before moving to the United States in 1994. In 1995, having no musical connections in U. S., David started performing classical music on an electronic keyboard in New York subways. These performances attracted the attention of The New York Times, which called him a "little Mozart" in a subsequent article. David's former last name was "Allakhverdov." David's playing and personality were also described in a German paper "Die Woche" in 1996. In 1997 he was successfully accepted to study at the Juilliard School in New York, under professor Seymour Lipkin. He has won several prizes at Juilliard, including Contemporary Honors Recital Award in 1998, playing the music of Shostakovich. In 2000, David won the first prize at Juilliard Piano Concerto Competition, which was followed by performance with the Juilliard orchestra. This orchestral debut drew the attention of "The New York Times" once again, and its headline read as: "Subway Soloist Takes The Stage At Juilliard." David also performed the Rachmaninov second piano concerto with Metropolitan Youth Symphony in 2001. He also appeared a few times in “From the Top” radio showcase for young musicians in Boston. In 2006, he was a semi-finalist of Young Concert Artists competition. He graduated from the Juilliard School in 2005, and currently continues his focus on various piano contests. He is also an active composer, and he enjoys writing songs in both languages, by means of electronic sound and also that of music notation. He is also pursuing Computer Science in a non-degree program at Hunter College in New York.
