Luigi Campeotto was born in Udine North Italy and immigrated to Australia in 1957.
He settled in Perth where he studied singing with the wonderful and patient singing
teacher Mervin Piper. He aroused so much interest that he was provided with a
scholarship organized by Mrs. Thompson and the West Australian community, to study
singing with well known soprano Adelaide Sarccemo from Teatro La Scala Milan.
On his return to Australia he became instrumental in the formation of the West
Australia Opera Company, with whom he sang the leading tenor roles of Don Jose in
Carmen (1966). Alfredo in La Traviata (1971) Rodolfo in La Boheme (1969).
Lieutenant Pinkerton in Madam Butterfly (1973) Ricardo Um Ballo in Maschera
(1972), organized by Edgley and Dawe attractions. He was invited to sing the leading
Tenor role at Nemorino in L’Elisie D’Amore (1967) By the New Zealand Opera
Company.
During this time for five years and by public demand, he also won considerable acclaim
as a finalist in “Showcase” a national television talent quest hosted by Gordon Boyd.
The musical director and conductor was the later Hector Crawford Productions.
He was also invited as the leading Tenor with the Adelaide Arts Festival to perform
“Messa Di Gloria” by Puccini the first gala performed the conductor being
Verdon Williams from ABC.
Luigi has sung as a leading Tenor at Opera Houses and concert halls in all
states of Australia and New Zealand.
Luigi toured extensively with the Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra as a solo
performer in “An evening in Vienna” (1982)
Luigi continues to perform at many charity functions nationwide and has recently
performed several concerts with the Polish and Italian Communities
In January 1997, it was destiny that brought Luigi Campeotto to the studio of pianist
and accompanist Antoinette Dikeloitis.
Luigi’s talent and amazing voice was well known to Antoinette and her husband
Antony back when they first heard him on the talent quest “ Holden Showcase”
Hosted by Gordon Boyd, a Hector Crawford Production.
Antoinette and Antony followed this program for five years and tried in vain to follow
his career, but they never heard of him again. Luigi in the meantime was in Perth with
the W.A. Opera Company for several years.
In 1972 Luigi decided to settle in Melbourne permanently after retiring from the stage
and set up in 1983 The Donny Brook Mineral Springs homestead for 15 years. Luigi was
only singing for pleasure for the hundreds of people who were visiting the homestead,
and who at the same time, were enjoying listening to the great voice.
After all these years of searching it was luck that Antoinette rediscovered Luigi thru a
very good friend and it did not take long to coax the Great Tenor Luigi out of retirement
and bring him back to the stage. She has been working with him since 1997 organizing
concerts, recital performances and now compiled this CD featuring Luigi’s incredible
voice compiling work from the past and present.
