elusive ones are anything but what their name suggests, they just dug the it (it’s the title of a Three Fish song and a poem by Rumi). After having met at a concert for Seattle’s Brad, Colette Smith and Brad Arundale got to thinking. They’d been fans of music all their lives. They’d rocked out in their respective bedrooms to the roar of rabid crowds in their minds. So why not forget about their day jobs (or lack thereof) for a moment and try their hands at a craft which many a wayward kid, lost and searching for direction in life, naively attempts. It couldn’t hurt. Sure it’s a ridiculously competitive, disheartening industry, awash with corruption and lacking in funds for those who dare to actually play their own instruments and write their own songs, but it sure as hell beats donning the corporate uniform and joining the sorry old rat race. Even if it means you have to starve in the process, at least you’ll be having fun.
And so elusive ones came to be, with Brad on vocals and guitar and Colette on bass. But one thing still proved to be, well, elusive. Not inspiration, that was coming in droves, but a drummer. A couple of skinsman came and went - Brad’s little brother Ross even had to jump behind the kit for the band’s first recording after one bloke quit the day before – but it wasn’t too long until the magnificent Stu Bell got in touch and stepped in to fill the void. A financial planner by day, a beast of a drummer by night, Belly was exactly what the band needed, both musically and personality-wise. The die had been cast, and the songs began to flow: the catchy rock groover Little One, the garage stomper All the Wrong Lessons, the rapid-fire punk song Stupid Luv and the ethereal A Peaceful Sleep all being brought to life in the rehearsal studio and all proving immensely enjoyable to play. But although alternative rock may be their forte, it’s on the chiming Chasing the Sun that elusive ones deliver their finest moment. A song which Brad wrote in the aftermath of his girlfriend moving to London, it’s an acoustic-flavoured gem that the band are very excited about.
Here’s hoping you feel that way too.
